Wetzell on the move - latest college wrap

NCAA Division I college basketball doesn’t take much of a break over the festive period with most teams having games scheduled immediately prior to Xmas and either side of the New Year. Here we take a look at how the Harbour players have fared in the past week as they build up to that busy stage of the season.

Yanni Wetzell received an early Xmas present. Accorded more court time than he has been receiving in the early games for Vanderbilt University he responded with 12 points, 5 rebounds and 2 blocks as the Commodores convincingly beat #18 Arizona State 81-65. The win improves the Vanderbilt record to 7-2.

St Mary’s Gaels were defeated 78-74 by Louisiana State with Dan Fotu snaring 5 rebounds to go with 7 points. Dan converted 2 from 3 from beyond the arc to make that 12 from 25 for the season at an impressive 48%.

Matt Freeman scored 6 points as Oklahoma Sooners took care of business against Southern California winning 81-70.

In Division II action Biola Eagles slipped to 2-3 in PacWest Conference play after a 73-59 defeat against Azusa Pacific. Alex Talma pulled down a game high 10 rebounds to go with 4 points but the Eagles have to stew over a third straight loss over Xmas as, unlike most other colleges, their next game is not until January 2.

The Harbour women in college are equally busy at this time of year.

Zara Jillings helped Fordham University Rams to a convincing 69-48 win against Columbia University. Zara totalled a career high equalling 8 rebounds to go with 6 points (3/5FG) and 3 assists. The Rams have a 6 win, 5 loss record this season.

Virginia Commonwealth slipped to a 60-57 loss to Old Dominion with Akiene-Tera Reed claiming 9 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 steals – VCU 6-4 after ten games of the current campaign.

In Women’s Division II play Chanel Brodeur-Muir tallied a season high 7 points as St Thomas Aquinas Spartans thumped Concordia 93-50 The Spartans are an impressive 9-1 this season.

Tiffin University are on a five game losing slide, their latest loss a 79-67 home defeat against Cedarville. Georgia Perrott-Hunt added 3 rebounds and a steal to 2 points for Tiffin.
