Jack Salt plays in front of 27,000 fans

From a Harbour rep player to playing in front of 27,083 fans – the rise of former Westlake standout Jack Salt continues.

In front of the largest crowd to watch a college basketball game this season, Salt and the Virginia Cavaliers emphasized their No 2 ranking in NCAA Division 1 with a 59-44 win at the Carrier Dome against Syracuse on Saturday. Salt chipped in with 6 points (3/3FG) and 6 rebounds with the Cavs now boasting an 11-0 record atop the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Also in the Atlantic Coast Conference Sam Waardenburg enjoyed a season high 21 minutes of action for Miami Hurricanes in their 84-75 success at Virginia Tech. The freshman forward came up with 3 points (1/1 3PG), 5 rebounds and a block as the Hurricanes improved to 6-4 in conference play.

In eight days time Salt and Waardenburg will meet face to face when Virginia visits Miami.

A season best 19 points from Alex Talma played a major part in Biola Eagles securing an exciting 73-70 home win against Azusa. Talma added 10 rebounds, 4 assists and a steal for good measure as Biola improved to 3-11 in the Pac West Conference.

Virginia Commonwealth picked up their second Atlantic 10 Conference win with a hard fought 56-54 win against St Joseph’s. Fresh from her A-10 Rookie of the Week award Tera Reed scored a game high 18 points (4/8FG) and team high equaling 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Ten of her points came from the foul line where the freshman guard was a perfect ten from ten.

Reed was held to just four points on Sunday as VCU were defeated 74-64 at Dayton to drop to 2-8 in conference play.

Tiarna Clarke (6 points) only put up two shots – both were from three point land – and both dropped – as Northern Colorado Bears improved to 8-3 in the Big Sky Conference with a 78-63 win at Montana State. Next up for Clarke and the Bears is a home encounter with Brooke Blair and Idaho State Bengals.

Zara Jillings scored 8 points and garnered 5 rebounds but Fordham Rams were defeated 91-85 in a double overtime thriller at St Louis. Jillings scored another 4 points as Fordham bounced back on Sunday with a 76-64 win against Rhode Island to move to 9-2 in Atlantic 10 play.

Ella Fotu added 3 blocks to a balanced 10 points/10 rebounds double-double as Hawaii Pacific Sharks beat Dominican 76-73. Unusually, an exact repeat of the scoreline accounted for Dixie State as the Sharks remained top of the PacWest Conference. Fotu scored 7 points against Dixie - the Sharks have now won 14 games straight and sit at the head of the conference standings with a 12-1 record.

It seems that every week we are reporting a double-double performance from Katie Diakhaby. This week the Northeastern Junior College centre monstered 26 points and 14 rebounds in the 85-71 win against Laramie College. Teammate Darci Finnigan, a former Waitakere representative, also threatened a double-double recording 16 points, 7 assists and 4 steals.

Also in junior College Georgia Perrott-Hunt scored 10 points (5/8FG) to help North Dakota State Wildcats to a seventh straight conference victory. Overall the Wildcats are an impressive 21-2 for the season.
