Rising Stars Wrap

The Rising Stars Competition has just concluded for 2014, the finals day being played on the Saturday just gone, 20th September at NSEC.

There was some serious young talent on display across all the age groups, boding well for the future of local basketball.

The finals were played out for all age groups and grades with some great close, exciting games taking place.

The U13 Development Boys Pool 1 was won clearly by the Central Cougars, winning all of their final 3 games. The following pool placings in this grade were not to be decided easily, with all three remaining teams finishing on the same points. Placings then had to be decided on team vs team count back. North Harbour Black ended up taking second spot followed by the Orakei Tigers and North Harbour White teams.

In the U13 Dev Pool 2 , the placings were a lot more clear cut. The Eastern Dragons taking out top spot, followed by the North Harbour Maroon and Franklin teams consecutively.

The U11 Mixed Rising Stars competition was a clean sweep by the North Harbour U11 Girls loosing only one of their 10 games. It was a great consistent performance throughout the season from them. Second spot in this grade went to the North Harbour Girls Black team, followed in this order by the WWABI Development team, Franklin, WWABI Green and WWABI Blue.

The U12 Mixed Rising stars grade came down to a very close finals day game, with the two top teams playing each other in a pool game and ending up in a draw. From this result placings again came down to count back with the WWABI Prems taking first place and CMBB Boys coming in second. Third spot belonged to the North Harbour Black team followed by Central Cougars, North Harbour Maroon and the CMBB Girls placed 6th.

The U11 Boys grade for 2014 consisted of 9 teams, with all except 9th spot playing 2 games on the finals day. It was a busy schedule for all the teams with some tense, close contests throughout the tournament. The finals game for this grade was to be played out between WWABI Premiers and North Harbour A. Some fabulous moves and composed play saw the North Harbour A team win 27-17 in the final and win the grade. This meant the WWABI Prems ended up a commendable second. The remaining teams in the grade were placed as follows: 3rd North Harbour B, 4th CMBB Boys, 5th WWABI A Boys, 6th North Harbour C, 7th Orakei Tigers, 8th Coast and 9th placing went to the young North Harbour Development team.

And so a successful basketball season comes to the end. Its time for everyone to have a break and get some practice in over the summer months, to be ready for next year’s representative season.

A big Thank You goes to all the coaches, managers and parents who were involved with the Rising Stars teams. These development teams would not be possible without your help.
