September 5th-16th
Samoa hosted their first SPG and their enthusiasm and zeal for the games dispelled all doubts about their ability to do justice to the games. Lack of space did not deter organizers from harnessing local support for the games and providing another spectacular venue for the games in Apia. Attempts to downsize the games failed and once again over 2500 competitors lined up for their various sports.
Alain Lazare once again dominated the long distance quartet and won all gold medals. Joe Roden won the 400m flat and hurdles race. Albert Miller dominated the decathlon and was deemed unlucky to have missed out on the 110m hurdles. Fiji once again showed they were a more competitive side in soccer and lost in the final once again to Tahiti.
The final medals tally once again showed the dominance of New Caledonia on 24 gold medals but hosts Western Samoa impressed with their strong effort to finish second only 4 medals behind. French Polynesia finished third on 13 only one ahead of Fiji and PNG. The final medal table showed a much more even spread of medals among the top five countries. Traditional dances and music heralded the close of another exciting SPG.
