MORE than 300 people came together last night to celebrate the best of the west at the WRFL’s Senior Presentation night.
Players, coaches, umpires, sponsors, league and club officials took centre stage at the Moonee Valley Racecourse as the WRFL presented a range of prestigious awards including the coveted Barry Priest medal.
Altona star Steve Kennedy was rewarded for his outstanding season, he won the Division 1 Best and Fairest.
He finished the count on 23 votes, four ahead of last year’s winner Kwame McHarg from Deer Park. Chris Stewart, also from Deer Park, rounded out the top three.
In Division 2, Belal Mesto from Newport Power won the Alan Smith Medal.
Mesto, in his first season at Newport, claimed the award ahead of North Footscray premiership player and last year’s winner Kieran Murphy.
After 15 rounds, Mesto finished on 15 votes, Murphy was on 14 votes and Manor Lakes captain Nathan Montague on 13.
Parkside star Jason Cloke tied with Wyndham Suns forward Daniel Hovey in the Division 3 Best and Fairest count. The talented duo each took home the Ron and Thelma Angwin medal.
Cloke and Hovey finished on 15 votes, two votes ahead of Parkside’s Chris Muratore and Wyndham Suns’ Hayden Iannacone.
Ethan Taylor from Altona capped off his impressive season, winning the Under-19 Best and Fairest award.
Taylor captained the Vikings to a premiership last weekend and was also named best on ground.
The 2017 Rookie of the Year award went to Josh Harris from the Werribee Districts. At 17-years of age he has been playing in the Seniors for the Tigers.
The AFCA Western Region Senior Coach of the Year was awarded to Brendan Hallinan from the Sunshine Football Club.
Jamie Cowlishaw won the Division 3 Reserves best and fairest. Luke Styles from Manor Lakes won the Division 2 Reserves medal and Aaron Law from Werribee Districts was presented the Division 1 Reserves best and fairest.
Christine Gent was awarded the Goal Umpire of the Year award, Greg Denison was named Field Umpire of the Year and Scott Vanstone the Boundary Umpire of the Year.
The Melbourne Injury Lawyers Unsung Hero award was presented to Craig Ryan from the Sunshine Football Club, while the Lindsay Patching Memorial Club Official of the Year award was awarded to Sue Thornton from the Tarneit Football Club.
Peppe Cavalieri won the Media Award.
