A GROUP of South Sudanese players from the Wyndhamvale Football Club will take part in a special AFL 9’s match against a Victoria Police team as part of Multicultural Round celebrations on Sunday.
The match will be played prior to the Collingwood versus Adelaide clash at the MCG and will also include WRFL Umpires.
Mathew Westgarth will be the field umpire, Deng Deng and Akhuar Akhuar will be the boundary umpires and in goals will be Daniel Higgins and Christine Gent.
Victoria Police has a strong relationship with the South Sudanese community in the west and in honour of Multicultural Round a plan was formed to engage the diverse community in the western suburbs.
“Events like this are a great opportunity for Victoria Police to engage with people from new and emerging communities in a friendly, light-hearted setting,” a Victoria Police spokesperson said.
“Usually the only time we speak to the community as police is when we’re responding to calls for help.
“We wanted to engage with the community in a different way and see this as a great opportunity to do so. It helps to build relationships, trust and confidence.
“Community engagement is a key aspect of policing and you can’t overlook the role it plays in helping people feel safe and secure in their community.”
