THREE of the WRFL’s most promising umpires have been selected to be involved in the 2017 Mates Program.
Luke McGuinness, Michael Westgarth and Ronan Hyland will get the chance to learn from AFL umpire Craig Fleer as part of the initiative.
A total of 17 umpires from across metropolitan Melbourne have been picked to be a part of the program, which was created in partnership with AFL Victoria and AFL Umpires.
The aim of the program is to promote the development of up-and-coming field umpires as well as giving them a glimpse into what it takes to officiate at the top level.
Over the course of the season, Luke, Michael and Ronan will speak regularly with their AFL mentor. Craig Fleer will also meet with the talented trio throughout the year.
