The Western Region Football League has announced its senior squad ahead of next month’s much anticipated 2017 WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships clash with the Northern Football League.
Fifty players from across the senior competition have been picked in the initial squad.
The team is spearheaded by five Barry Priest medallists, Kwame McHarg (Deer Park), Wayde Skipper (Hoppers Crossing), Matt Dean (Werribee Districts), Chris O’Keefe (Spotswood, current playing coach of Albion) and Tim Jenkins (St Albans).
Division 1 champions Deer Park have 11 representatives selected, while last year’s grand finalists Hoppers Crossing have 10 players named.
Senior coach Anthony Eames said he was looking forward to working with some of the best players from the WRFL.
“We have brought together a good mix of youth and experience. We have a great blend of leaders from across the WRFL,” he said.
“The players we have picked are the mainstays of our competition and we are certain that the spirit generated by these group of players will be positive.”
Some returning WRFL stars have also been selected, Parkside’s Jason Cloke, Spotswood’s Wayne Patak and Altona’s Steven Kennedy.
“If Cloke is in good form he can be as damaging as anyone and both Patak and Kennedy are home grown WRFL juniors who have won premierships for their respective clubs, so to have them involved will be exciting,” Eames said.
Meanwhile, the WRFL’s Under-19 team will again be led by Matt Dean. Dean coached the side to a 95-point win over Ballarat last year.
The senior squad’s first training session will be held at VU Whitten Oval on April 26.
The WRFL will take on the NFL at Preston City Oval on May 13.
More announcements regarding the Community Championships will be announced in coming weeks.
