THE Unity Cup is celebrating a milestone this season, with the event marking its 10th anniversary on April 2.
Each year the Unity Cup brings together people from different multicultural communities for a day of football and fun.
Created by the Australian Federal Police and the Essendon Football Club in partnership with the AFL Multicultural Programs, the 2017 Unity Cup will see more than 200 participants aged between 15 and 21 take part.
Thirteen male and seven female teams will be involved, with the event taking place at JJ Holland Park in Kensington.
AFL Victoria Diversity Manager Xavier Moloney said the Unity Cup showcased everything that is great about Australian football.
“The Unity Cup is much more than just a football tournament,” he said.
“There may be a trophy up for grabs for the winning side, but this is a competition where participation is far more important than victory.
“Football is a sport that welcomes everyone, regardless of their size, ability or background and this is never more on show than at the Unity Cup.
“To have so many people from diverse backgrounds embracing our game through this tournament over the past decade is something we are immensely proud of,” he said.
Australia Post AFL Multicultural Player Ambassadors Jason Johannisen and Lin Jong from the Western Bulldogs, Collingwood’s Helen Roden and Carlton star Darcy Vescio will also be on hand throughout the day.
The Unity Cup will be held at JJ Holland Park in Kensington on April 2, between 9am and 5pm.
