IT is set to be a momentous weekend for the AFL, as the inaugural season of the AFL Women’s competition gets underway.
Eight teams from across the country will go head-to-head for premiership points for the first time.
The Western Bulldogs will start their 2017 campaign with a game against Fremantle at VU Whitten Oval on Saturday night. The Round 1 match will begin at 7.35pm. Entry is free.
The inaugural game kicks off a big month of footy at Whitten Oval, with four matches scheduled to be played at the ground over four consecutive weeks.
Thousands of fans and aspiring footballers are expected to flock to the games.
The historic AFL Women’s season has sparked an overwhelming interest in female football across the west, with 22 clubs poised to feature in the WRFL’s girl’s competition in 2017.
After a number of years being combined with the Essendon District Football League, the WRFL will have a standalone competition this year.
The new competition will feature Under-12, Under-15, Under-18 girls and Senior Women’s, with hundreds of players ready to make their mark.
