RYAN Harrington’s round-high six goals helped his Werribee Districts side to an 80-point mauling over St Albans.
The Saints started the stronger side, recording seven scoring shots to three in the first quarter, but kicked just one goal and six behinds from those shots.
The Saints were shut down for the rest of the game as Werribee’s defensive prowess shone through, St Albans kicking just one goal and four behinds in the final three quarters.
The game was still to be won heading into the final term, however, as the Districts were ahead by just 18-points after only recording four behinds in the third quarter.
Ten goals in the last quarter sealed the 15.12. (102) to 2.10. (20) victory and gave the Districts a nine percent increase in its percentage, keeping it ahead of chasing Altona on the ladder.
Werribee will face ladder-leaders Hoppers Crossing in a battle of first versus second on Saturday, while St Albans have the week off with the bye.
Barring a major collapse, Altona will finish the season in no worse than third place after its 18.17. (125) to 4.2. (26) smashing of Wyndhamvale.
The Vikings had 12 individual goal kickers, Adam Fenton’s four led the way.
One positive to come out of the match for the Falcons was that the side was able to win the third quarter, outscoring the home side 19 to 16.
The 99-point win gives Altona’s percentage a massive boost, and if results go its way, they could leapfrog Werribee as its two remaining games are winnable.
The Vikings will travel to face Sunshine, Deer Park hosting Wyndhamvale.
Five goals to Bradley Busuttil and four to Cory Connor helped Sunshine overcome a quarter-time deficit and run out comfortable 54-point victors over Spotswood.
The Kangaroos booted nine majors over the second and third quarters, which broke the game open and ended any chance the Woodsmen had of retaining its slim lead after the first term.
The 13.12. (90) to 5.6. (36) win puts Sunshine two games ahead of fifth-placed Deer Park with just two games remaining.
Spotswood will next battle Albion.
Hoppers Crossing absolutely obliterated Albion 21.22. (148) to 3.2. (20) at the weekend.
The Warriors nearly had more individual goal scorers (16) than the Cats did total points, highlighting the dominance the home side had on the day.
Top spot is all but secured for Hoppers after its massive 128-point thrashing heading into the season’s final two rounds.
