DEER Park have claimed top spot on the ladder after a 49-point win over Altona at John McLeod Reserve.
The Lions controlled the match early, but could only manage a two point lead at quarter-time due to poor kicking in front of goal and Altona pinching a couple of goals through quick play.
Deer Park cleaned up their kicking in the second quarter and were able to stretch the margin out to 21-points as they kept the ball in their half for much of the quarter.
The rain started to fall late in the second quarter and although it eased up during half-time, it still affected both teams’ ability to score in the third quarter as Altona were held scoreless and Deer Park managed just one goal, extending the lead to 29-points.
Defence was the focus from the Lions in the last quarter as they kept the Vikings scoreless again on the back of several strong intercept marks from Rusiate Komaitai, giving them a 49-point win and top spot on the ladder.
Jye King was the standout for Deer Park, finishing with several marks and three goals while Brody Psaila also kicked three goals. Will Taylor played well for the Vikings and Tom Langham kicked two goals.
Hoppers Crossing picked up another comfortable 40-point win over Spotswood at Hogans Road Reserve.
A combination of strong defence from the Warriors and poor kicking from Spotswood meant Hoppers Crossing restricted the Woodsmen to just one goal in the first three quarters.
The game looked to be another blowout with Hoppers Crossing leading by 45-points at three quarter time, but a solid last quarter from Spotswood dragged the final margin back to 40-points.
Nick Poland was Hoppers Crossing’s best while Jackson Fullerton led the scoring with three goals. Salah Saaoud was Spotswood’s only multiple goal scorer with two.
Werribee Districts lost top spot on the ladder after a three point loss to Yarraville Seddon at Yarraville Oval.
The Tigers looked set for a comfortable win with a 17-point lead at three-quarter-time, but Yarraville Seddon turned the tables with a three goal to none final term to seal the come from behind upset win.
Max Lienert and Ben Wagland starred for Yarraville Seddon while Ryan Tyson led the scoring with two goals. Aaron Law and Joel Russell also kicked two goals each for Werribee Districts.
Round 16 will see Werribee Districts travel to Hogans Road Reserve to take on Hoppers Crossing. Spotswood host Yarraville Seddon at McLean Reserve while Altona and Deer Park have the week off with the bye.
