WERRIBEE Districts overcame Sunshine in what was a tight and scrappy affair at Soldiers Reserve at the weekend.
The Districts jumped out an early lead and appeared headed for a big win, as the home side kicked four goals to one putting them ahead by 19-points at the first break.
The Kangaroos kicked two goals in the second quarter, and reduced the margin to 14 going into the half-time break.
The game was won in the following term as the Districts’ three majors pushed the lead out to 29-points, all but ending Sunshine’s chances of scoring a come from behind win, as they could only managed to score 40-points over the four quarters.
Eventually, Werribee were able to run out 26-point victors in the low-scoring match, keeping it one game ahead of Altona in second place on the ladder.
Jordan Patty kicked four goals for Werribee Districts, while Ben Leonard was named best on ground for his efforts.
In Round 13 action, the Werribee Districts will head to JR Parsons Reserve to face the Cats, while the Kangaroos will get the chance to re-group with this week’s bye.
In other matches, Altona came from behind at the half to down St Albans by 21-points.
Heading into the half, the Vikings were down by eight-points, but kicked seven majors to three in the second-half to gain the lead and ultimately win its eight game of the 2016 season.
The Saints will be disappointed it was unable to hold onto its lead as the side now slumps to 3-8, and in seventh place on the ladder.
There next match will be against Wyndhamvale.
Christopher Raftopoulous’ five goals led Deer Park in its 13.18. (96) to 6.3. (39) win over Albion.
The Lions started strongly, having nine scoring shots to three in the first term, but six of those being behinds kept the lead to just 11-points.
It grew to 25-points after the boys in blue kicked four goals to two in the second term.
The Cats were unable to keep up with the pace, particularly in the second half as they managed to boot just two goals to Deer Park’s six.
The 60-point win keeps the Lions in touch with the top sides, as they now sit just one game behind the top four.
Finally, Spotswood forfeited its Round 12 match with Hoppers Crossing due to lack of numbers.
The Woodsman will next play host to the Lions.
