Altona continued its great run of form in its 11.6. (72) to 5.6. (36) victory over Albion, with only percentage separating the Vikings from Hoppers Crossing and top spot.
The match up was a defensive battle, neither side kicking its fifth goal until the second half of the game.
Despite the lack of goals, Altona won comfortably by booting six final quarter goals to the Cats’ one.
Vikings player Lochlan Allen was the leading goal kicker, slotting home three majors, teammates Nathan Wapshott and Matthew Davies also added two each.
Albion will need several wins in a row if the side has any chance of playing finals, as it trails sixth-place St. Albans by one game and fifth-place Sunshine by three games.
A win on Saturday against the Werribee Districts could see Altona create a gap between the top-two sides and the chasing pack, while Albion will look to get its season back on track in a home game against Wyndhamvale.
Cory Connor’s eight goals was the highlight of Sunshine’s crushing 106-point win over Wyndhamvale.
The Kangaroos were the superior side all day and led at all breaks.
Nine majors in the final term sealed the big win for Sunshine.
Wyndhamvale’s six goals are vastly better than its previous outings, as the side had only managed to kick one goal in its last two matches combined.
Bradley Busuttil and Giovanni Raffaele were the other major goal kickers in the 23.11. (149) to 6.7. (43) win, booting five and four goals respectively.
If Sunshine is able to beat Deer Park in their matchup, the sides will swap positions on the ladder.
Deer Park recorded its fifth win of the season, downing St. Albans 10.7. (67) to 5.6. (36).
After a tight first quarter, the game broke open in the second as the Lions took control, kicking four goals to zero.
The second half was relatively equal, with both sides booted three goals apiece.
The 31-point victory increased the gap between the Lions and the Saints on the ladder, as Deer Park now sits two games ahead.
St. Albans will need against their next opponents Hoppers Crossing if it is to stay in touch with the top four.
Four goals to none in the third term was enough to see the Werribee Districts get over the line in a 44-point victory over Spotswood.
The 12.9. (81) to 5.7. (37) win puts the Districts four points ahead of chasing Deer Park on the ladder.
