AS we close in on the halfway point of the season, Parkside has launched above fellow contenders Wyndham and Tarneit with a tremendous three point victory over the latter side.
On a wet and windy day at Wootten Road Reserve, the Magpies held on for a famous win despite kicking only two goals in the second-half.
Tarneit trailed all day in the dour contest and just couldn’t find the killer blow.
Leading by 13 at the first change, 17 at the half and 16 heading into the final stanza, Parkside showed their grit and determination to hold off a fast finishing Tarneit.
Leading the way for Parkside was Campbell, Ferguson and captain-coach Mark Folwell with two goals.
Tarneit fought hard and kept their opponents goalless, but it wasn’t enough as Parkside registered a four point victory and their sixth win for 2016.
They now sit atop the table, with their healthy percentage the difference.
Elsewhere, the Newport Power held onto a top four spot, defeating Laverton comfortably.
They ran away after a close first quarter and never let the opposition back in the game, finishing with a 53-point win.
Easy victories like this will be vital for the Power who currently sit in a tussle with Sunshine Heights and Sanctuary Lakes in the middle of the table.
It was another week and another trouncing for Braybrook, kicking a solitary goal as they went down to Wyndham Suns by 92-points on Saturday afternoon.
The easybeats of 2016 continue to disappoint and they had no answers for the structured attack of the Suns.
Wyndham shared the load perfectly, with four multiple goalkickers. The best of the lot was Christopher Stephens who booted two majors and was the difference up forward.
A major positive for the Suns was that they never took the foot off the pedal, outscoring Braybrook in every quarter and kicking at least three goals in each.
Looking forward to Round 9 of the WRFL season, Laverton will have the opportunity to lick their wounds and re-assess with the bye.
They currently have two wins and six losses, sitting in seventh and a game behind the middle table logjam.
Tarneit should be able to keep the momentum going as they face Braybrook who are yet to notch their maiden victory this year.
Second and fourth face-off as Wyndham and Newport will battle with the Power hoping to close the gap on the top three.
Finally, Parkside play North Sunshine which has the potential to be a tough contest despite the relative ladder positions of both teams.
