About 50 aspiring footballers have been braving the wintry conditions at Whitten Oval each Wednesday afternoon, taking part in the Western Bulldogs all-girls Auskick Centre.
The Primary school aged footballers, who might one day play in the Western Region Football League, have been involved in the program for the past five weeks.
The enthusiastic youngsters have been playing in games and learning some tricks from AFL Victoria staff during the program.
In one of the sessions, Western Bulldogs captain Steph Chiocci, was on hand to teach the girls the basic skills of footy.
She said it was great to see such a large group of girls wanting to participate each week.
“They are excited,” Chiocci said.
“It starts at the community level at the grassroots level and one day they will be playing in the national league and hopefully in Doggie’s colours.”
Chiocci also spoke about the clear pathway now on offer for women in the game, with the introduction of a National Women’s League in 2017.
“The game is growing for women and the participation numbers are growing every year, so I think it is smart that we do have a national league.
“There is a clear pathway now and I think that is a really important thing for parents to no.”
