By KRISTEN ALEBAKIS - Division 2 Seniors
IT was only round two, but many are tipping North Footscray and Caroline Springs to be the teams that go head-to-head for the premiership in September.
The two teams met on Saturday, in what was an exciting, and entertaining Division 2 Seniors match at Hansen Reserve.
The Lakers led for most of the match and despite not kicking a goal in the last term was able to hold off the fast finishing Devils to win by seven points.
North Footscray had most of the play in the third and fourth quarters, but couldn’t capitalise on their opportunities.
The Devils had 15 scoring shots to seven in the second half, but only managed to boot six goals.
While co-coaches Shaun Borlase and Matthew Walsh will be kicking themselves after their team’s missed chances, they should take confidence in the fact that they could stick with the Lakers for most of the match.
Mathew Sutton kicked three goals for Caroline Springs, star recruit Brian Lake booted two, but spent most of his time in the back-half.
For the Devils, Lucas Hall kicked four goals and Tyson Bock snagged two goals of his own.
North Footscray will look to bounce back with a win against Albanvale on Saturday, however the Cobras have started their campaign in Division 2 strongly, with two wins from as many matches.
Caroline Springs will host Glen Orden on Saturday in what will be a special ‘Anzac Spirit’ match at Town Centre Reserve.
The Reserves will kick off at 11.50am. An Anzac Spirit Ceremony will begin at 2pm and then the Senior Match will get underway at 2.15pm.
In other Division 2 Senior results, the Yarraville Seddon Eagles were able to score its second straight win against Glen Orden.
The Eagles got off to a fast start, kicking seven goals to two in the first quarter, however the Hawks managed to restrict their opposition to just two points in the second term to close the gap to one point heading into the second half.
After a tight third quarter, the Eagles’ were able to pull away from the Hawks, winning by 19-points.
Ryan Cornish kicked three goals for the home side, with Dean McDonald, Kevin Upton and Scott Krakouer also kicking two goals each.
For Glen Orden, Dane Thomas was the only multiple goal scorer, snapping two goals.
In the final match of Round 2, Manor Lakes scored its first win of the season, defeating West Footscray by 54-points.
Jackson Lesko kicked four for Manor Lakes and Kane Liossis also kicked four for West Footscray.
