THE Werribee Tigers will get a chance to play on the MCG’s hallowed turf in the lead up to its Round 1 VFL match.
The Tigers will take on the AFL Under-18 Academy team next Friday in a curtain raiser to the AFL clash between Collingwood and Richmond.
The match shapes up to be an exciting one for the Tigers as it gives the players a chance to fine tune their game ahead of their 2016 campaign, while it also gives the public a glimpse of the national Under-18 team, a team which includes some of the best underage talent in the country.
Werribee coach John Lamont said it was a great opportunity.
“Some of our blokes have never played on the ‘G’ so that is a real buzz for them,” he said.
“Plus, it is an opportunity to put our players under the eye of all AFL recruiters.
“Players like Wilson, Gribble, Conway, Porter, Robinson and Maishman all have ambitions to get to an AFL club, so this is a huge opportunity for them.
“It is also a good gauge for the Under-18 boys to see what the next step up the AFL pathway is like.
“We hope there is bit of a crowd after halftime as the Richmond and Collingwood supporters file in.”
Lamont said the game was also a chance for players to show their worth to the Tigers coaching panel ahead of the first official game of the season.
“Everyone will be going 100 per cent trying to impress for selection in the Round 1 team,” he said.
“The next day on April 2 our remaining squad will take on Footscray at Whitten Oval as we round out our preparation”.
The Werribee Tigers will take on the AFL Under-18 Academy team on the MCG at 4.35pm on April 1.
