DANDENONG Stingrays’ star defender Jacob Weitering was the top pick at Tuesday night’s NAB AFL Draft, headed to the Carlton Football Club.
Touted as a possible future Blues captain, the talented young gun averaged almost eight marks a game in the TAC Cup this season and played a pivotal role in Vic Country’s championship carnival win.
Described as a Harry-Taylor type, Weitering ran a 15.1 beep test at the NAB AFL Draft Combine and also ran a 3.04 seconds in the 20m sprint.
The 18-year-old is the Blues’ fourth number one pick in 11 years, joining Marc Murphy, Bryce Gibbs and Matthew Kreuzer.

No youngsters from the Western Jets or the Calder Cannons were selected in the draft, however they still could get their chance to score a spot on an AFL list in Friday’s rookie draft.
Western Jets trio Lachlan Knight, Mitch Norton and Luke Goetz and Calder Cannons players Callum Moore, Nicholas O’Kearny and Hisham Kerbatieh are all potential hopefuls.
The Calder Cannons tweeted; ‘Congrats to @aflvic & all @TACCup clubs on a big @AFLDraft. Disappointed for Cannons boys, but lots of opportunities still ahead, keep going.’
The pre-season and rookie draft will be held on Friday.
