SOME of the WRFL’s rising junior stars will kick off their 2017 AFL Victoria Metro Junior Championships campaign on Wednesday night.
The WRFL’s five representative sides have been training for the past six weeks and are looking forward to going head-to-head with some of the best talent in the state.
This year the league will field two Under-14 teams, two Under-15 teams and an Under-15 girls side.
The top two teams in each division will then go on to play in the Grand Final, which will either be played on June 24 or July 1.
The championships are the first stage of AFL Victoria’s talented pathway program and gives TAC Cup sides like the Western Jets and the Calder Cannons a chance to get an early glimpse of the stars of the future.
AFL Victoria Community Football Operations manager Gerard Ryan said the Championships provided Melbourne’s best junior players with a chance to test their skills.
“The Metro Junior Championships continues to provide an opportunity for Melbourne’s best junior players to be discovered and showcase their skills against quality opposition,” he said.
“A number of TAC Cup scouts will be present at games throughout the Championships and use the competition as a platform to view players for consideration in their elite development programs.
“While all leagues will be hoping to take home some silverware at the end of the series, participation in the Metro Junior Championships in itself is a fantastic achievement and something all players, coaches, umpires and staff will look back fondly on in the years to come.”
The WRFL’s Under-13 players will also be involved in a Junior Carnival on Sunday, June 11 against the Essendon District Football League and the Riddell District Football League.
