THE Albion Football Club will honour the contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples this weekend, with the club’s Seniors, Reserves and Under-19 players wearing a specially designed guernsey as part of Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Round celebrations.
The jumper was designed by the uncle of current players Kym and James Taylor. The design celebrates their Indigenous culture and also honours their mother Raelene Clinch, who passed away in October.
Kym said he was looking forward to pulling on the jumper.
“I love the way the jumper looks,” he said.
“It means a lot to wear the Indigenous jumper, our club has never changed the jumper before, so I’m really looking forward to putting it on.
“It will also mean a little bit more for me and brother James, the jumper has our mum’s initials on it. We will play in honour of her.”
The Cats will also have a smoking ceremony before their match with St Albans at JR Parsons Reserve.
Kym said Saturday’s match with the Saints should be a good one and encouraged footy fans in the west to head to the game.
He said the evenness of the Division 1 competition, meant that every game was a challenge.
“We have been playing well over the past couple of weeks,” Kym said.
“St Albans is always tough, hopefully we can win it.”
