It was a third quarter blitz from Altona that saw them defeat Caroline Springs by 59-points to notch their fifth win of the season and put themselves equal first on the WRFL Under-19 ladder.
Altona have been a strong first quarter side all season and Saturday was no exception as they nailed five goals in the opening term with Lachlan Fox kicking three of them.
The Vikings were able to rebound at brisk pace to cut through Caroline Springs’ forward press to bring the ball mostly via the right wing. At quarter time Altona lead by 33-points.
In the second quarter Caroline Springs showed more intent, ferocity and spread at the contest, halving the centre clearances to display their running game which saw them kick five goals to one trimming the deficit to 12 points.
Altona put the foot down in the third term kicking six unanswered goals to turn a two goal lead into a 51-point margin. Despite having a loose man down back, Caroline Springs weren't able to prevent Altona from finding numerous targets inside 50 with Joel Menadue taking plenty of strong grabs and kicking four goals for the term.
The last quarter Altona controlled the play and the tempo of the game kicking a further three goals to record a comfortable 59-point win. Interestingly only four of the 22 goals were kicked to the northern end of the ground.
For Altona, Menadue and Fox were simply brilliant up forward slotting 10 majors between themselves. Ethan Taylor also continued his fine season with another consistent performance. Jack James was the best for Caroline Springs with his intercept marking a highlight and Dechlan Markovski tried hard all game.
The Yarraville Seddon Eagles accounted for a gutsy Hoppers Crossing outfit by 32 points, consolidating top spot whereas Werribee Districts were too good for the Wyndhamvale Suns, 19.20. (134) to 4.2. (26).
The remaining games of round five saw Newport bounce back with a demolition of Albanvale, 29.23. (197) to 0.3. (3), Spotswood defeated St Albans by 127 points, whilst Albion did the job on Wyndhamvale 25.19. (169) to 0.6. (6).
