ALBANVALE fought off a gallant West Footscray at Robert Bruce Oval, winning by 18-points in the season opener.
The lead changed several times throughout the match, with the Cobras clinging onto a six-point lead at three quarter time.
The home side kicked the first four goals of the final quarter, which was enough to claim an important Round 1 win. The final score was 14.9. (93) to 11.9. (75).
Albanvale star Dane Thomas kicked five goals and Thomas Jehle booted four goals in an impressive display. Simon Kelland was West Footscray’s best player.
The Shane Lucas coached Roosters will take a lot of positives from the match, with the senior side showing a lot of improvement since last season. In contrast, the Cobras and the Roosters met in the same game last year, with Albanvale winning by a massive 152-points.
Newport Power made its debut in Division 2, taking on North Footscray at Bryan Martyn Oval.
After unfurling their premiership flag from 2016, it was down to business, with the Power putting in an honourable Round 1 performance.
Newport stuck with North Footscray for three quarters, but couldn’t go toe-to-toe with the Division 2 heavyweight in the final term.
The Devils kicked 10-goals to four in the final quarter, blowing the Power away to win by 50-points.
Tyren Montebruno kicked five goals for North Footscray, captain Sam Kater also booted four goals.
For the Power, Cameron D’Altera was the star up forward, kicking five goals.
In the final game of the Round, last year’s Grand Finalists, the Yarraville Seddon Eagles defeated Manor Lakes by 48-points.
Only 10-points separated the two sides at half-time, but it was one way traffic after the main break, with the Eagles booting eight goals to the Storm’s two, to score a convincing win.
The final score was 13.11. (89) to 6.5. (41).
Division 2 Reserves
The Yarraville Seddon Eagles kicked of their title defence with a dominant victory over Manor Lakes, winning by 78-points at Howqua Reserve.
Manor Lakes had a positive start in the first quarter and only trailed the Eagles by two-points at the first break.
But as the second quarter got under way the Eagles started to control possession and by half-time their lead blew out to 35-points.
It was more of the same in the second half, with the Eagles piling on eight goals to two to win 16.14. (110) to 5.2. (32).
Paul Azar kicked five goals for Yarraville, while Jack Hargreaves bagged four goals.
Albanvale also scored a Round 1 win, edging out West Footscray by seven-points at Robert Bruce Oval.
Karl Truscott and Martin Bielski were the main targets up forward for the Cobras, the pair kicked four goals between them.
In the final match of the Round, North Footscray defeated Newport Power. The final score was 15.12. (102) to 6.6. (42).
Matthew Walsh kicked three goals for the Devils. Michael Garstin was named best on ground.
