THE Western Region Football League and Essendon District Football League’s inaugural Senior Women’s competition will kick-off this Sunday.
The historic round of football will see teams from both league’s go head-to-head for premiership glory.
Four clubs from the west will compete in the 11-team competition. Manor Lakes, Glen Orden, Tarneit and Caroline Springs will all be involved.
WRFL CEO Matthew Duck said 2017 was a ground-breaking year for women’s and girl’s football.
“The WRFL is committed to growing female football in the west and the introduction of the senior women’s competition is an exciting step for our league,” he said.
“This new senior competition will now provide girls in our region with a clearer football pathway.”
This year the WRFL also launched a standalone girls competition, which features Under-12, 15 and 18’s.
The number of female participants has grown significantly from last year, with almost 400 new players registering to be involved in the WRFL.
Seven teams have entered the Under-12 competition, 11 teams are in the Under-15 competition and nine teams in the Under-18’s.
“It is fantastic to see so many young girls and women follow their footy dreams,” Duck said.
“It is an exciting sign for the growth of the game.
“Everyone involved with the WRFL is looking forward to seeing how it will all unfold in years to come.”
