THE Western Region Football League is pleased to announce Anthony Eames has been re-appointed coach of the Senior Interleague side.
Eames led the WRFL to a memorable three-point win over Ballarat during last year’s AFL Victoria Community Championships and will again head the charge in 2017.
Last year’s win saw the WRFL climb the Interleague ranks, which means the team from the west will take on the Northern Football League this year.
“The NFL will be a tough assignment, but the effort and the buy in from players last year proved we are more than capable of matching it with some of the best leagues in the state,” Eames said.
Brett Jacobs will be back on board as an assistant coach, while newly appointed Albion coach Chris O’Keefe will join the coaching panel as an assistant.
“Brett Jacobs has a great passion for the westerns suburbs, he is renowned in football and he is keen to be involved,” Eames said.
“Former Spotswood champion and current Albion coach Chris O’Keefe will also be a great support this year.”
Passionate WRFL identity Steve Thom will continue in his role as Chairman of Selectors for the senior side.
WRFL Football Operations manager Tim Shellcot said it was great to see Eames commit to coaching the senior team for the second consecutive year.
“Anthony is a well-respected coach who led the WRFL brilliantly in 2016,” he said.
“We are looking forward to working with him, his coaching team and all the players as we chase back-to-back Community Championship victories.”
Eames says he is looking forward to working alongside some of the best and brightest stars from Melbourne’s west and said he will be keeping a close eye on some of the league’s young guns.
“We won’t be changing the way we go about it this year, the players are expected to commit to the program and they have to come with a passion for the western suburbs,” he said.
“Last year’s group was outstanding. If most of the players who played last year are still involved with the WRFL and are in good form, then they will certainly come under consideration to be selected.
“There is a lot of young players coming through the ranks as well, there is some great talent in this competition and this year I would like to identify those players a little better.
“If we can get a similar group on board this year and they are committed to the team, then that will hold us in good stead.”
The WRFL will take on the Northern Football League on May 13. A venue is yet to be decided.
More announcements regarding the WRFL’s 2017 Interleague campaign will be made in coming weeks.
