GIRLS footy will be front and centre in the Western Region Football League next season and over the next few weeks we will be profiling all the clubs who will be fielding teams in our standalone competition.
Today, we learn more about the Spotswood Football Club…
Spotswood’s Under-15 Girls team had a year to remember with the team winning a premiership in their inaugural season.
The talented team of youngsters defeated Keilor in the Grand Final by two-points after playing extra time.
The players, coaches and parents were ecstatic when the final siren sounded and now their momentous win is being used as a springboard to attract and encourage young girls in the west to play footy.
“2016 was exciting, not just for Spotswood, but girls’ footy in general,” Spotswood’s Lorey Bentley said.
“The fact that girls now have a clear pathway to pursue this great game into their teenage years is an amazing opportunity.”
Many of the girls that played for Spotswood this season had little to no experience playing footy, but their willingness to learn and commit to the group meant they were able to achieve the ultimate prize.
In 2017, the club is set to build on their recent success and introduce more girls teams.
“We have had a fantastic response to our ‘Come and Try’ sessions and next season we are looking at fielding teams in Under-12, 15 and 18 age groups,” Bentley said.
“The friendship amongst the girls is fantastic and we hope to build on this across all our teams.
“The fact that we won a premiership was incredible, but even better than that was seeing the teamwork and encouragement amongst the ‘Woodswomen’ grow every week.”
Ian Allan has been appointed coach of their Under-15 team, Chris Grant will take the reins as Under-18 coach. An Under-12 coach will be appointed shortly.
“One of the really pleasing aspects of the year has been the support that the girls’ team has had from the other teams and their coaches,” Bentley said.
“Our club motto of ‘One Club, Many Teams’ has certainly come into effect this year.
“The focus on our girls’ teams is to build friendships, improve skills and learn about this great game in a safe and supportive environment.”
