GIRLS footy will be front and centre in the Western Region Football League next season and over the next few weeks we will be profiling all the clubs who will be fielding teams in our standalone competition.
Today, we get to learn more about Albion’s plans for next season…
This year was a historic season for the Albion Football Club, with club breaking new ground by having a girls’ team for the first time.
In 2017, girls footy will again be in the forefront of the club’s plans, with goals to field Under-15 and Under-18 teams well underway.
Cats administrator Karyn Tribe said it was great to see so many young girls wanting to be involved with the footy.
“We were excited to launch our first Under-15 girls’ team this season,” she said.
“We saw improvement each week in the girls’ performance and they continued to work hard and develop their skills.
“New players signed up each week taking our final numbers to 30 players. It was great to see so many girls at the club.”
Tribe said the Under-15 team has not stopped training since the end of the season and was already looking forward to getting stuck into the 2017 season.
She said the introduction of the AFL Women’s competition would further encourage young girls to the sport.
“It is exciting times as women's football evolves and creates great opportunities for females,” Tribe said.
“We have been fortunate to have both Steph Chiocci and Kaitlyn Ashmore visit the club, they have been real mentors to the girls and have given them inspiration.”
Tribe said if anyone was interested in being a part of the Albion Football Club they could contact her on 0407 355 498 or visit the Albion website.
“We are currently finalising our coaches, they will be announced in the coming weeks,” she said.
"We have appointed Nat Cook as our Under-15 Girls Coach. Nat has been running the fitness and development program since October.
“Pre-season training has started and is held on Wednesday and Thursday evenings between 4.45pm and 6.00pm.
"This involves fitness and skill development. The program is for girls eligible to play in our Under-15 and Under-18 girls teams.”
