DEER Park’s dominance of the Western Region Football League’s Division 1 competition continued on Sunday when they defeated Hoppers Crossing by 114-points.
Played in-front of a packed crowd at VU Whitten Oval, the Lions again showed they are the best of the west, winning their fourth consecutive premiership.
The historic feat sees the club create league history, with no other team in the WRFL or FDFL winning four straight flags.
It was an intense start to the final match of 2016, with scores level after 10 minutes.
Deer Park soon kicked into gear and from then on proved to be unstoppable. They booted 10 goals in the first term and led by 39-points at the first change.
In the second term, both teams were evenly placed, with the Warriors slowly working their way into the match.
However after half-time the Steven Kretiuk side failed to fire a shot at the Lions, who controlled the game.
Deer Park kept Hoppers Crossing to one goal and seven behinds in the second half, while they piled on 12 goals, 16 behinds.
Overall it was an impressive performance by the Lions, who in the end had 46 scoring shots to the Warriors’ 17. The final score was Deer Park 25.21. (171) to Hoppers Crossing 8.9. (57).
For the Lions, Kwame McHarg kicked a game high five goals, Brendan Fevola and Jase Perkins each kicked four goals, while Spiros Amarantidis booted three goals.
Hoppers Crossing star and Collingwood VFL listed player Jackson Viola was named the best player for the Warriors.
Judged best on ground by the umpires was Lions player Rodney Van Reit, he was awarded the Herb Pascal Medal by Parkside’s Brian Wilson during the presentations after the match.
Playing coach Marc Bullen and captain Chris Stewart were also presented with the premiership cup by WRFL acting president Meredith Angwin.
“The players, you are certainly a special bunch, the support you have showed me over the past four years has been outstanding and you absolutely put on a show today,” Bullen told the crowd.
