THE Western Region Football League is conducting an inquiry into an incident that occurred in the last quarter of the Division 3 Grand Final held at Wootten Road Reserve in Tarneit on Saturday.
The investigation is ongoing and will be completed by the end of the week, however inquiries to date have established that a number of aspects of the media coverage of the incident have been wildly exaggerated.
It has been established that a disturbance broke out early in the final quarter amongst approximately a dozen supporters of the two competing teams.
Contrary to reports, the disturbance lasted no more than two or three minutes.
Initial inquiries indicate that what began as good natured banter between spectators degenerated after drinks were sprayed at opposing supporters.
While there was a large crowd of onlookers who closed in on the disturbance, club officials from both sides and security guards quickly restored order.
There were no serious injuries reported to club officials or the league either at the game or in the period since.
Reports of physical abuse of a pregnant female are totally unfounded, indeed there is no evidence that any pregnant female was present.
While the WRFL board takes a serious view of any such incident and will continue its enquiries throughout the week, it is disappointed that some sections of the media have been prepared to publish unsubstantiated rumour as fact.
The outcome of the enquiries and any action to follow will be published through official WRFL channels in due course.
