NEWPORT Power has overcome a gallant Wyndham Suns side, determined for one last win in 2016.
Still with a slim chance of making the finals, Wyndham gave everything in their Round 18 match, before fading away in the final term to lose by 36-points.
The Suns started the better team, kicking four goals in the first term to lead by 18-points at quarter time.
Newport looked to take control of the game in the second, however inaccurate kicking kept the Suns in it, as the Power held just a seven-point buffer at the main break.
Wyndham again struck and look to cause a major upset, as they trailed by three points at three-quarter-time, however they simply ran out of legs as Newport piled on five goals in the final stanza.
Mustafa Mesto and Mouhamed El-Hassan were the main scorers for Newport with three majors each, while Rhys Kirk kicked three goals for the home side.
In a game without their skipper Mark Williams, Newport did not lack in stars, Hamza Abdo, Khaled Souki and Ahmed El Hassan among the best.
For Wyndham, Joshua Stephens played gallantly and managed to add two goals to the Sun’s tally.
For now, Wyndham’s season is over and will have a well-deserved break after a strong season, and will be hoping to fire in 2017.
However the victory sealed the minor premiership for Newport in their debut season, a remarkable feat.
In the rounds other games, Sanctuary Lakes defeated Sunshine Heights by 26-points, sealing their spot in the top four, while Tarneit had a massive win against Braybrook, who were held to just one goal.
Led by Aaron Molivas (6 goals), Todd Lawrie (6 goals), and Adam Taylor (5 goals), the Titans put on a show, kicking 38 goals and running out winners by 257-points.
Meanwhile, Parkside also had a dominant win, as they accounted for North Sunshine by 124-points.
This weekend Newport and Parkside will kick of Division 3 finals in their semi-final on Saturday at Wooten Road Reserve.
For the winner, a birth in the Grand Final is up for grabs, while the loser will have a second chance in the preliminary final.
Tarneit will play Sanctuary Lakes in their cut-throat semi-final on Sunday, the winner progressing to the following week, while the loser will be eliminated.
