CAROLINE Springs have all but secured second spot on the ladder after defeating North Footscray at the weekend.
The Lakers will have to win one match from their remaining two games to finish in second position, with the Yarraville Seddon waiting for them in the first week of finals.
The atmosphere was electric at Town Centre Oval on the weekend Saturday, as spectators came out to watch the second and third-placed team fight it out for a top two spot, with Caroline Springs not disappointing.
The home side put in a dominant performance in the Round 16 clash.
North Footscray were not able to score in the first quarter, and it seemed they were trying to make up for it the rest of the match, but continued to fall short, especially in the third quarter where they were left goalless.
Lakers star Matthew Gunn was the best forward on the ground, kicking three goals, while team mate Micheal Saker added two more goals to his season tally.
Saker currently sits four goals ahead of Yarraville Seddon Eagles player Micheal Volpi on the goal kicking leader board.
Vincent Leung and Shaun Gill were two of North Footscray’s best players, however their defensive skills were just not enough against Caroline Springs’ Joel Ives and Jake Knuckey.
On the eve of the finals, the win will be a confidence booster for the Lakers, who earlier this season suffered a loss to the Devils.
In other matches, Manor Lakes were keen to win its second straight match when they took on West Footscray at Shorten Reserve.
However, they couldn’t match it with the Roosters, with the home side scoring an impressive 10-point victory.
The win was there second for the season.
In the final match of the round, Glen Orden lost to Yarraville Seddon Eagles at Heathdale Oval.
The final scores was 4.0 (24) to 11.16 (82).
The Eagles have now extended its winning streak to 14 consecutive matches.
With just two games remaining against Manor Lakes and Caroline Springs, the Eagles will be hoping to head into the finals undefeated.
North Footscray will be hosting Albanvale at Hansen Reserve, while Caroline Springs will be taking on Glen Orden at Heathdale Oval.
West Footscray has the bye.
