As the WRFL regular season reaches its conclusion, the title contenders have begun to stake their claims for the ultimate prize.
Tarneit broke from the pack with a vital four goal victory over fellow premiership hopefuls Wyndham Suns and sit a game clear on top.
With only two rounds remaining in the season, it will be tough for Wyndham or the second placed Parkside to unseat Tarneit unless they have a serious drop in form.
In a strange match, Tarneit appeared to have the result wrapped up by quarter time, kicking seven goals and keeping their opponents scoreless. However, the Suns kept Tarneit to just three majors for the remainder of the game and almost pulled off a miracle win.
The ladder-leaders now look ahead to a massive clash with Parkside on Saturday and will be hoping to consolidate their current position heading into finals.
Wyndham on the other hand, should have a simple victory against the bottom-placed Braybrook.
If Braybrook continue the form of the past fortnight however, the result could be much closer. They backed up last week’s narrow two goal loss with another tight defeat, going down to Laverton by 28-points.
For the lowly Bombers it was a case of leaving too much till the final quarter. They didn’t kick a single goal in the first half, trailing by 37-points, but turned the momentum around booting six goals to four in the second half.
Scott O’Neill played the lone hand up forward for Braybrook with three goals to his name. Laverton were led by efforts from Brad Davis, Mason Ahumada and Manni Hatzigiakoumis who kicked two goals.
The Magpies will be looking to ruin Newport’s finals chances as they take on the Power this week.
The Power themselves coasted to a relatively easy victory over Sunshine Heights to the tune of 56-points.
The win was very important as it widened Newport’s percentage gap over fifth-placed Sanctuary Lakes and kept them in contention for finals.
The scoring was shared amongst Newport’s dangerous forward with Faissal Taleb (four), Michael Sotiroudis, Mohammed Souki, Youssef El Hawli and Khaled El Haouli kicking two goals apiece.
Newport can confirm a finals berth by defeating Braybrook, but if an upset was to occur they would be forced into a potentially must-win contest against Wyndham Suns in Round 18.
