IS there something wrong with Werribee Districts? That is the question resonating throughout the WRFL at the moment after a dismal showing last week from last year’s grand finalists.
The score line said it all - St. Albans 10.11 to Werribee Districts 3.6. A look at the Districts record this year does not read very well. They have beaten Altona twice, but have lowered their colours to the Saints, Sunshine and Spotswood as well as Hoppers Crossing and Deer Park (twice).
Their grip on third place and the double chance is very tenuous.
The Vikings can slip into third, they have Sunshine and Albion coming up while Districts face Hoppers Crossing (home) and Spotswood (away).
The boys from Soldiers Reserve do have a better percentage than Altona, but a loss this Saturday could see them drop a spot should Altona win.
Can Districts bounce back against top placed Hoppers Crossing? Yes they can, but I don’t think they will.
This will be the Warriors last hit out before the finals. Their round 18 bye, plus the possibility of another week off, means they will want a full on hit out, and the Districts will be on the receiving end.
There is no love lost between these clubs and Hoppers will rub some more salt into the divide between these two.
Jase Perkins leads the race for the Andrew Gibson Medal, and with team mate Brendan Fevola, his nearest rival out injured, he could make a charge when the Lions host the Falcons this weekend.
The reigning premiers have the points calculator working overtime for the last two weeks of the season, honing the best 22 to create history.
Spotswood can jump back into the five this week with a win over Albion. At the time of writing this Spotswood had not announced its 2017 senior coach, but I think the Woodsmen will knock over the Cats, and put the onus back on the Saints to displace them from the five.
Sunshine has been threatening to beat a top side for a number of weeks, and I think this Saturday at Kinder Smith Reserve is going to be that day. The Kangaroos have not won since Round 5 (May 7).
Surely they can break a 10 game losing streak. It won’t be easy, especially with the Vikings finally finding a spearhead in Mitch Turnbull, but I am going to give the Roo Boys the edge here.
Two rounds to go and every game has something to make it memorable.
