THE Manor Lakes Football Club will turn pink on Saturday, to help raise awareness of breast cancer.
Senior players will wear a specially designed pink jumper, while juniors will wear pink shoe laces as part of the club’s specially themed round.
This is the second year the club has decided to throw its support behind finding a cure for breast cancer, however the July 9 fundraiser has taken on a whole new meaning this year.
The niece of Storm president Keith Priest and the daughter-in-law of WRFL legend Barry Priest, Rebecca Priest, is currently suffering from breast cancer.
Keith’s wife Kim said Rebecca, a 36-year-old mother of three, had been diagnosed with cancer only a few months ago.
“Rebecca is a very active young mother who was playing netball weekly and just got up and showering one day found a small lump, this little lump turned out to be an aggressive cancer that for the last few months has totally changed their lives,” she said.
“She has undergone chemotherapy, and operations to remove lump.
“Rebecca faces a major operation this week and will have a long road to recovery.
“She comes from a very large family and friends who all love and will support her through her recovery.”
Football clubs have always been great places to get support from others and Kim says that has been the case for Rebecca.
“She is going through a terrible part of her treatment now,” she said.
“We are all here for her and will be long into the future.
“One of our girls’ team members lost their mother earlier this year and l believe the girls have been a great support to her.
“As a family we all support each other.”
Kim said a big part of holding a pink themed round was because Rebecca wanted to raise awareness of breast cancer in our community.
“Rebecca just wants everyone to become aware of breast cancer and for people to their monthly checks and if you have any doubt to go to the doctor immediately,” she said.
“We want to find a cure for this terrible disease.”
