SPOTSWOOD is the club in the headlights after another loss at the weekend to Hoppers Crossing.
I don’t think they will lose their spot in the five before the finals, but I have been wrong before.
It might come down to the second last home and away game when they play Albion at Parsons Reserve, but that is still a few weeks away, and right now they have a red hot Deer Park to contend with.
Spotswood has been ravaged by injuries, to the point where they could not field a reserves side last week, something that will not sit well with such a proud club.
Deer Park is firing and as I have suggested in previous weeks, they are tinkering with the line-up trying to find the right balance for the finals.
Coach Marc Bullen told us on the radio post-match that Jackson Barling and Sam Hunt are back in the fold, and will probably see senior game time in the next few weeks.
Both are one point players which is a sensational bonus for the defending premiers.
Spotswood has been easy prey for the Lions in recent years and will be again this Saturday.
If St Albans head down to Wyndhamvale thinking about anything else than putting its best foot forward, it can turn the cars around and head back to Kings Park with nothing to show.
The Falcons are no easy beats, and woe is the team that thinks they are, especially on their home turf.
Steve Thom is predicting an upset win to Wyndhamvale here, and while I think it is possible, I believe the Saints are still are clinging to a faint, withering finals chance and with that, I think they will just get home.
Altona can still grab third spot and a win over Hoppers Crossing would give them more than just momentum.
The Vikings have only beaten one side in the top five this season, and need to be able to knock over the big boys if they are going to do more than make up the numbers in September.
That said I can’t see them beating Hoppers.
Wayde Skipper seems to be over his shoulder problem and he is the key to the Warriors.
Albion is hovering thanks to Spotswood’s form slump.
They matched Deer Park for a half, but then got blown away 13 goals to two in the second-half.
Werribee Districts got home in the final seconds with an Andrew Panayi special against Sunshine. If Nathan Black had kicked straight it might not have been needed, but Paul Chapman will be thrilled that Black is up and about, injury free (touch wood) and making his presence felt.
Albion will still be hovering after this game, but won’t get the points.
