Division 3 Seniors
NEWPORT and Tarneit’s match was touted as a potential preview to the Division 3 grand final at the weekend and after a tight first quarter it looked to be an even contest throughout the afternoon.
However after the first quarter it was a different story, with Newport putting on a dominant display, opening up an assailable 40-point lead at half-time.
The Power were down by seven points at the first break, but pilled on nine goals to one in the second quarter to break the match open.
They kept their opposition scoreless in the third term, while they added another four goals to increase the margin to 63-points.
Tarneit won the last quarter, kicking four goals to two, but the damage was already done, Newport winning by 51-points.
Power playing-coach Mark Williams led the way for the home side with six majors, Mahmoud El-Hawli also kicked three.
Todd Lawrie was Tarneit’s best forward. He booted two goals.
It was a very long and agonising day for Braybrook, completely shut-down by their opposition, Parkside.
Parkside controlled the match from the first bounce to the final siren. Their most impressive quarter was the third, when Magpies kicked 11-goals.
It wasn’t just their attack that was a standout, their defence was also impressive, with the Brookers only managing to score nine points in the second-half.
Adrian Gervasi led the way for Parkside, he kicked six goals, while Brent Kelly, Colin Tornatore, Ryan Keenan, James Keenan, Matthew Shepperbottom and Ben Ashman all bagged three goals each.
It only gets tougher for Braybrook in Round 11, who will come up against the top placed Newport Power. Parkside will take on Sunshine Heights.
The Dragons also had a big win at the weekend, disposing of North Sunshine by 76-points at Dempster Park.
Only nine points separated the two sides at the main break, but a spirited Sunshine Heights outfit came out firing in the third quarter.
The away side kicked 14-goals to four in the second-half to score their fifth win of the season.
In the final match of the round, Laverton came agonisingly close to getting their first win of 2016, but couldn’t match it with Sanctuary Lakes for four quarters.
The Magpies led by eight points at half-time after coming back from a first quarter deficit, however they couldn’t continue their momentum in the second-half.
The Sharks fought-back in the third quarter, kicking seven goals and keeping the Magpies to just three behinds.
Laverton gallantly fought back in the final term, but the damage was done.
Sanctuary Lakes ran out 18-point winners. They will face the Wyndham Suns in Round 11.
