NEW West Footscray ‘Hands on’ carpentry training facility offers alternative to apprenticeship
Trade Institute of Victoria unveils new Workplace Carpentry Training Facility Centre in West Footscray.
Last Wednesday TIV unveiled its new training centre in Paramount Rd, West Footscray. This new facility allows for students to learn ‘on the job’, actually constructing buildings under qualified trainer/supervisors.
The requirement for this training facility arose out of TIV’s concern for individuals interested in a career in the building industry but for who an industry apprenticeship was not the answer. For a variety of reasons: age, life’s circumstances, inability to find an employer, all meant that for many, another option to gain access to the building industry was needed. TIV’s Certificate III in Carpentry course’s content is identical to the content for Certificate III Carpentry apprenticeships.
TIV’s training program has 3 main components:
1. Approximately 1000 hours of carpentry training, practice and assessment, delivered by trainers who are both qualified carpenters and qualified trainers and assessors.
2. Six months full time, paid work under the supervision of a professional builder during which individuals hone their carpentry skills.
3. Transition into full time employment as a qualified carpenter.
And it works TIV”s completion rate currently stands at 73% significantly higher than the 43% completion rate construction trades as a whole experience. Full time employment rate for TIV’s course participants is consistently close to 100%.
