AS part of the AFL’s Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Round, local leagues have been encouraged to get behind the celebrations.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of Indigenous Round. On this special milestone the AFL decided to rename the round in honour of Sir Doug Nicholls, who was the first Indigenous footballer to represent Victoria at state level.
In the Western Region Football League, the Manor Lakes Football Club will be wearing a specially designed Indigenous jumper that honours and respects the Indigenous athletes that are not only playing in our competition, but across the country as well.
AFL Victoria and the WRFL is strongly encouraging clubs in the region to get behind the round.
Also, in a curtain-raiser to the Dreamtime at the G clash between Richmond and Essendon, the Rio Tinto Cup will be played at the MCG.
Seven Victorian’s were named in the 2016 Rio Tinto Footy Means Business Squad, including Wyndhamvale’s own Amon Hudson.
The 19-year-old played has been playing with the Falcons for the past four years.
He played in the Division 1 Seniors in Round 1 and has also played in the Reserves this season.
Hudson has also been involved with AFL Victoria’s Laguntas Program, which offers young Indigenous footballers a pathway to the elite level.
The Rio Tinto Cup match kicks-off at 2.55pm on Saturday at the MCG.
