ALTONA was the only team able to string together back-to-back wins in a week that saw the winners play the losing teams from Round 1.
The 13-point win over Yarraville Seddon sees the Vikings claim top spot on the ladder.
Altona got off to a fast start with Joel Menadue kicking the first three goals of the match while the Viking defenders limited Yarraville Seddon to just one goal to take a 19-point lead into the first break.
The Eagles came out stronger in the second quarter but struggled to take a mark inside the forward 50 and were only able to reduce the lead to 17-points at half time.
Altona asserted their dominance in the third term kicking four goals to two, including a big goal from outside the arc by Oliver Lanning, and extended the margin to 31-points before the last quarter.
With only six goals to three quarter time, Yarraville Seddon looked to be on the brink of their second big loss of the season before turning the tables on Altona and dominating the last term.
Lachlan Huell did his best to get the Eagles over the line, kicking four goals in the last quarter, but ultimately it was not enough as Altona held on for a nail-biting 13-point win.
Menadue finished the game with five goals for the Vikings with Lachlan Fox and Suren Bowala kicked two each.
Lachlan Huell was Yarraville’s leading goal kicker with five while John Navara and Michael Tsaloukis got a lot of ball through the midfield.
Werribee Districts picked up their first win of 2016, beating reigning premiers Spotswood by 23-points at Soldiers Reserve.
In a low scoring affair, the Tigers were able to restrict Spotswood to just five goals for the match.
Joel Russell and Aaron Law bagged three goals each for Werribee Districts while Nayef Hamad was Spotswood’s standout with three majors.
Deer Park also got their first win on the board defeating Hoppers Crossing by 25-points at John McLeod Oval.
Mark Galea kicked three goals for the Lions and Tyson Maiava snagged two, while Brayden Kitchen and Jackson Fullerton were the Warriors only multiple goal kickers with two apiece.
This week sees Altona look to cement their spot on top of the ladder when they play Werribee Districts at Grant Reserve in a rematch of their Round 1 game.
Spotswood and Hoppers Crossing will both be looking to bounce back from their defeats when they meet at McLean Reserve and Deer Park travels to Yarraville Oval to take on Yarraville Seddon.
