IN just two years the Caroline Springs Primary School Sports Association Girls Football Championship has grown from two teams to eight.
From having no competition prior to 2014, the event has seen considerable growth in the region, with about 170 girls set to pull on the boots on April 15.
School Sport Victoria Western Ranges Division Primary coordinator Aron Lombardi said it was extremely important to see young girls decide to play footy.
“As the teacher at Christ the Priest Primary School I made sure we had a team in 2014 to play against Parkwood Green,” he said.
“This will be the first year that we have more than two sides.
“I am very proud of the progress we have made in growing the competition.”
Mr Lombardi said one day, it would be great to see every school in the region have a girls team.
“I think girls playing football is extremely important, it is one of the main reasons I have pushed for the growth of the competition over the past three years,” he said.
“I also think it has been an empowering experience for the girls as it shows them that tasks that seem difficult can be achieved and that girls can do anything just as well or better than the boys.”
Christ the Priest have three teams competing, Parkwood Green have two teams, while Creekside College, Springside College and Taylors Hill also have teams in the competition for the first time.
Mr Lombardi said the team who wins will become the Caroline Springs District champions.
“The winners will then progress to the Division Finals,” he said.
“We are hoping with the expansion of the competition will help prepare the girls for the next stages of competition and we eventually see a Caroline Springs School as the State Champions.”
The competition will be held on Friday April 15 at the Caroline Springs Oval.
