WESTERN Region field umpiring duo Ebony Stevens and Sidney Bruhn are set to join the AFL Victoria Female Umpire Academy.
The talented pair, who were nominated by umpire coaches to take part in the Academy, will be joined by six other new umpires from across the metropolitan leagues in tonight’s induction.
Supported by the Susan Alberti Medical Research Foundation, the Academy gives umpires aged between 16 and 26, the chance to train with AFL umpire Mathew Nicholls.
AFL Goal Umpire Chelsea Roffey is the Academy Ambassador and will also share her knowledge of the game with budding umpires.
Through the Academy, both Stevens and Bruhn will practice and improve their umpiring skills, including learning bouncing the ball techniques, laws of the game, personal development as well as getting the chance to take part in an AFL Field Umpires training session.
As a result of their Academy training, the pair will also get the opportunity to umpire representative matches picked by AFL Victoria, with the hope that female umpires will soon umpire at VFL level.
South East Juniors umpires Stephanie Girardo, Jaimie Collard, Jess Prime, Riplee McLachlan, Monique Shaw and Riddell District’s Kiara Taylor will also take part in the academy.
