PNG Basketball Teams Launch FIBA Melanesian Cup Campaigns with Convincing Wins Over Vanuatu

Papua New Guinea’s Men’s and Women’s National Basketball Teams opened their FIBA Melanesian Cup campaigns in dominant fashion, securing back-to-back victories against Vanuatu and setting the tone for a spirited tournament ahead.

From the opening whistle, PNG’s Men’s Team controlled the tempo, surging ahead with an 11-point lead in the first quarter and never looking back. The team posted consistent scoring across all quarters—27 points in both the second and third, and a final 24 in the fourth—to seal a commanding 99–39 win.

  • Harold Elavo led the charge with 16 points and a 20% shooting efficiency.
  • Enoch Vele (11 points) and Allan Millard (10 points) added scoring depth.
  • Matthew Kairi anchored the defense with 9 total rebounds, including 6 defensive boards.

“Everyone stepped up,” said Elavo. “I’m proud of the boys, and we got the win.”

Despite the scoreline, Vanuatu showed heart in their tournament debut. Frank Karae demonstrated control in the mid-court with 3 assists and 3 steals, while Ashley Vora led scoring with 8 points, followed by Terrence Coleman (6) and Peter Dementyev (5).

The PNG Women’s Team mirrored the men’s momentum, delivering an 82–36 victory that showcased teamwork, resilience, and national pride. The squad also took a moment to honour Vanuatu’s courage, acknowledging the team’s journey through recent natural disasters and limited court access.

“It was an honour to share the court with a team that embodies strength and perseverance,” said PNG captain Betty Angula.

  • Lynette Tongia – Efficiency rating: 21
  • Betty Wong – 15 points
  • Jackie Asiba – 15 rebounds

The FIBA Melanesian Cup continues tomorrow with PNG’s Women’s Team facing Fiji at 10:00 AM PNG Time, followed by the Men’s Team taking on New Caledonia at 12:30 PM.

This marks the third edition of the FIBA Melanesian Basketball Cup, following tournaments in 2017 and 2022. As a sub-regional competition under FIBA Oceania, the Cup strengthens basketball development and regional rivalry among Melanesian nations.
