FIBA and BFPNG reset for quality
Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea — Basketball Papua New Guinea (BPNG), in partnership with FIBA Oceania, has successfully concluded a dynamic three-day strategy session aimed at reflecting, resetting, and advancing its operational and program delivery frameworks.
Under the leadership of President David Peter, Basketball PNG has continued to gain momentum through its commitment to progressive basketball development. The organization’s methodical approach emphasizes both the physical and mental aspects of the game, empowering athletes with solid fundamentals while guiding them toward elite performance through strategic collaboration with FIBA Oceania.
A cornerstone of BPNG’s vision is its flagship community engagement platform, Basketball for Good. This transformative program leverages the power of sport—particularly basketball—to support initiatives in education, health and wellbeing, women’s empowerment, and community cohesion.
Key initiatives under Basketball for Good include:
- Hoops for Health
- Pikinini Hoops
- Mum’s a Hero
- Twilight Basketball
These programs aim to foster inclusive, high-quality basketball environments while nurturing healthier, more engaged citizens across the nation.
As part of the recent strategic planning session, FIBA Oceania representatives Mr. Siale Bina Vete and Mr. Lai Pamaua engaged with BPNG to provide expert insight into leadership alignment, governance structures, and the evolving responsibilities of a national federation. Their guidance reinforced the commitment to strengthening federation management and building sustainable pathways for the sport’s growth throughout Papua New Guinea.
The collaboration is supported by Team Up, an Australian Government initiative that continues to empower regional sports bodies through targeted development and strategic partnerships.
