Exciting visit for Basketball

Port Moresby - The Minister for Higher Education, Research, Science & Technology and Minister for Sport Hon. Feo Kinoka officially launched Port Moresby Elite Basketball (PEB) competition for 2025.

The Minister during the launching said Basketball is amongst the highest paid sports in the world. And encouraged players to set clear goals and stay committed to achieving them. “If you want to be the best player, you have to work hard for it.” – said the Minister.

The Prime Minister Hon. James Marape, who was also there to support the Minister and to commemorate the event said, the level of competition in basketball has really picked up. He urged the Federation to promote school competitions, regional competitions, especially with teams in Queensland. Showing his interest to return to the basketball court, he further asked The Federation to initiate a golden oldies competition, so he and former players can participate.

David Peter – President of BFPNG, acknowledging and responding to the Prime Minister and the Sports Minister, said that the desires and the aspirations of basketball has been encapsulated in the strategic plan 2025 – 2028, which was launched three weeks ago.

The Prime Minister asked the federations to provide copies of the strategic plan to his and the Minister’s offices.

Although challenging, there is definitely exciting times ahead for Basketball in the country. We have made a lot of progress in a very short span of time and the Prime Minister’s, Sports Minister and the vice sports minister’s, visit adds a lot of value to our efforts to grow and develop basketball.

BFPNG is embarking on developing semi-professional competitions and therefor, elite competitions such as the one organised by PEB is important step in that direction

And therefore, we’d like to thank Competition Director Lawrance Lahari, and his chairman Mr. David Wereh for initiating the PEB competition.
