Happy National Women's Day
Today, we celebrate National Women’s Day in Papua New Guinea, a day dedicated to honoring the contributions and achievements of women across various sectors of our society. Since 2016, the Basketball Federation PNG (BFPNG) has witnessed a remarkable transformation in the involvement and representation of women in the sport of basketball, highlighting their talent, resilience, and commitment.
Despite this encouraging progress, women in basketball still face numerous challenges that impede their full participation. These challenges are rooted in deep-seated cultural and social norms, persistent domestic violence, and an overwhelming burden of household responsibilities. Moreover, concerns about public safety and the absence of adequate wash facilities further complicate their journeys, making it difficult for many women to engage as they would wish.
However, we are steadily making strides in overcoming these barriers through innovative initiatives such as Basketball for Good, Her World Her Rules, and WiLead. These programs are designed with the aim of empowering women, fostering a sense of community, and enhancing opportunities for women both on and off the court.
From grassroots programs to elite competitions, the achievements of women in basketball across Papua New Guinea are reaching unprecedented heights. This progress is made possible by the unwavering support of the Australian Government through the Team Up in the Pacific and the ongoing strategic support and guidance by FIBA Oceania.
The Basketball Federation is wholeheartedly dedicated to cultivating a safe and inclusive environment where everyone, particularly women and children, can engage meaningfully in the sport. Together, we are working toward a future where women in basketball can thrive and inspire others to follow in their footsteps.

That's great - we want you to have your say and share your thoughts with the world. However, we have a few rules that you must follow to keep it fun for all. Please don't be rude, abusive, swear or vilify others. Apart from some pretty serious sport sanctions, we also can ban you and report you if things get out of hand.
