2024, The year that was
What a slam dunk year for the Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea.
This year has seen significant strides in women and girls' empowerment both on and off the court, reflected in record-breaking engagement on its mission to spread the Basketball for Good message. While we celebrate these achievements, we are actively looking ahead to building on this momentum towards even more impressive outcomes in 2025.
Numbers that Sizzle
It’s an awesome feeling to shoot swish after swish!
The recent success of BFPNG illustrates notable progress in gender equality in sports, evidenced by a surge in female participation, which now comprises 77% of its engagement in making it a safer and more inclusive space. This development aligns with the fundamental belief that basketball is a sport for all. Our impressive 9,915 participant increase in 2024 has resulted in a total of 122,350 individuals, marking a significant leap forward from the previous year's 112,435. This progress is truly heartening and a testament to our continuous growth and development.
Beyond the Buzzer
We place a high priority on promoting community impact through both our on-court and off-court efforts. We are pleased to announce that this year, we have heightened our affiliations, with a total of 34 new associations joining us in 2024, compared to 14 in the previous year. This achievement is indicative of the success of our 3x3 delivery, conducted across four regions, resulting in notable provincial representation for the upcoming Asia Cup and Mini games in Palau. Moreover, we strongly believe in creating a level playing field for our corporate partners, endorsing social inclusion while fostering a healthy and active lifestyle. To this end, we recently hosted the All-Stars National Championship in Goroka Eastern Highlands Province, bringing together participants from remote areas, which included engaging in a clean-up work parade, with stakeholders such as sponsors and the government to demonstrate how sport can engender positive community impact.
