TAIWAN NAVY SINKS IN PALAU

In a see-sawing first quarter the two teams gave no mercy as they battled for supremacy.  With a height advantage, the Taiwan team looked to take control but the fast breaking style of the Palau team kept them in touch.  The large crowd of sailors cheered every basket and possession their team gained and drowned out any vocal support from the locals.  Several late quarter turnovers by the Taiwanese gave the local team a 7 point lead at the first interval.

The second quarter was also close but some excellent trapping defence by the Palauans provided several turnovers to them and they capitalized on every one.  Much better effort by the Taiwan inside players helped them to close the gap to just 5 points at the half.  The major contributor in this quarter for Palau was forward, Traxx Mark, who worked hard in defence to make several steals and led the fast break on many occasions.

During the half time break, Palau Coach Logan Ngiriou pleaded with his players for more intensity in defence and far better patience in offence for the next quarter, and he was rewarded by the players outscoring the Taiwan team by 23 - 13 in the 3rd quarter.  The Taiwan bench was deep with plenty of substitutions and the smaller Palau bench was forced to rotate to keep fresh players on the court.  The PBF male player of the year, Douglas Schmidt, had a field day with steals and easy fast breaks, and he was well supported with good defence by Lendel Kloulubak and solid rebounding by Sione Isechal and Anthony Rudimich.  Forward Robert Ngual was instrumental in scoring several clutch baskets in the final minutes of the quarter.

Going into the final quarter with a handy 15 point lead, the Palauans became a littlel overconfident and the Taiwan team started to close the gap.  A time-out by Coach Logan soon sorted that out and the Palau players settled down to play more team basketball rather than their usual individual style.  Point guard, Benedict Kintaro was instrumental in causing several turnovers for the opposition and big man, Donnel Ueki was dominant inside on the defensive boards.

It was an entertaining game that the crowd thoroughly enjoyed and with much noise and cheering, coupled with many Mexican waves (some led by the Ambassador for Taiwan), the entertainment by the visiting sailors was also much appreciated by the local supporters.

Final score Palau 86 and Taiwan Navy 69.
