Surangel Stars move to Division A finals

Surangel Stars made an uphill climb as they fought their way into the Division A finals beating a hard fighting Western Union, 91-94, Sunday in the Filipino Basketball League (FBL) at the Palau National gym.

The Stars had a slow start as they logged behind Western Union in the first quarter at 16-30. Despite outscoring Western Union in the second, the Stars saw themselves inches away as they trailed 53-48 at the end of the first half of play.

In the third canto, the Stars used their height advantage and speed to overtake Western Union using a 27-16 run to taste the lead at 75-69. Then both teams engaged in a see-saw battle with the Stars using their dominance in the paint giving them the win.

Arnold Undecimo and Rex de Asis did much of the damage for the Stars as they finished the game with identical 22 points, respectively while the duo of Anon Cajegas and Dennis Castro topscored for Western Union also with identical 24 baskets.

With the win, Surangel Stars will face the Ilocandia Bulls in a best of three Division A finals with Game One set on April 20 at 3 p.m. while Western Union automatically finishes third place honors.

In Division B, Liquid Skyy Dragons held on to beat Hanpa Cardinals, 109-102 while the Rams subdued the Jaguars, 95-89.

With that Liquid Skyy Dragons will face the Rams also in a best of three Division B finals while Hanpa Cardinals will meet the Jaguars for the battle for third.

The Cardinals-Jaguar tussle is set on April 20 at 12 p.m. while the Dragons-Rams match in Game One will be at 1:30 p.m.
