2011 Shell IP&E NBL Islanders, High Tide take early lead

After beating team Rivals, 77-50 on opening day, the Islanders again showed no rustiness as they defeated Mercury Optimax, 89-67. After taking a 45-32 lead at the end of the first half, the Islanders never looked back as they went on for the win.

 Roger Santos paced the Islanders with 31 points with teammate Kent Moore adding 12 baskets as they now sport a 2-0 win-loss record while Mesikt led the scoring chores for Mercury Optimax with 23 baskets as they are 1-1 in the team standings.

 On the other hand, team High Tide opened their campaign with back-to-back wins. High Tide first defeated Breakers, 82-72 Tuesday night and then went on to route team Rivals Wednesday night with an 88-71 tally.

 High Tide waxed hot in the fourth quarter wherein they outgunned the Rivals with a 27-15 output as they also carry a 2-0 win-loss card. Raul Osias muscled his way in the paint as he clipped 27 points and was complemented by teammate Arvin Pramo who chipped in 25 while King Ngiraboi tallied 23 markers for the Rivals who are now 0-2.

 In other games, Meda won over 4x4 Wheelers, 56-54; Mercury Optimax defeated Meda, 79-63; Peched bested 4x4 Wheelers, 79-74; and Airwaves outgunned Kabong, 78-75.

 Games will resume tonight with Islanders versus High Tide at 6 p.m. followed by the Peched-Kabong match at 9 p.m. May 23 will have Rivals against Airwaves at 6 p.m. followed by the Breakers-Peched tussle at 7:30 p.m. while Meda will face Kabong in the main game at 9 p.m.

 The tournament, which is supervised by the Palau Basketball Federation (PBF), is a tobacco, alcohol and drug free program. Any violators will be banned from participating.
