OMELAU RECEIVES HIS CERTIFICATE

The occasion was also recorded by an article on the FIBA Oceania website by Secretary General Steve Smith who commented “Palau have set themselves some very ambitious targets for increasing the popularity of our sport with a target of 1,500 participants by 2012.  I cautioned them not to set the bar too high for themselves, but if the progress to date is any guide, they are on track for success."

"Not only is this a great achievement for basketball but it is also good for Palau." said Smith.  "Being part of a basketball team teaches responsibility, a sense of community and also teaches about teamwork, sportsmanship and other important social values.  A commitment to an active sporting life will help young people learn important health habits which will assist Palau stem the rising tide of obesity, heart disease and diabetes, all of which are on the rise across the Pacific.  Children who are actively involved in basketball are not engaging in anti-social behaviour and this is another plus for Palau." Smith went on to say.  "I hope the appropriate government and health authorities lend their support to the efforts of Palau Basketball because a small investment now will lead to big benefits later on." Smith concluded.
